The Pickpocket Who Inherited a Goldmine. After his harsh beginnings as a rough-and-tumble orphan on the streets of London, Jake Everton takes his rightful place as the long-lost heir of an aristocratic family with magical powers – his personal quest, to follow in his slain parents’ footsteps as a Lightrider in the age-old battle of good versus evil. In the fantastical nooks and crannies of the Victorian Age, Jake and his friends (including his pet Gryphon!) find no shortage of adventure – righting magic-related wrongs, solving supernatural mysteries, and exploring wondrous new worlds. A Dark Presence… Something stalks a quaint town in the misty mountains of Wales, attacking humans and magic folk alike. Jake and his friends must get to the bottom of it – and in the land of deep, dwarven mines, the bottom can be very dark, indeed. Dive into The Gryphon Chronicles, a rollicking historical fantasy series (with a hint of steampunk!) that’s as much fun for grownups as it is for kids, from the imagination of New York Times bestselling author, E.G. Foley. “A wonderful novel in the same vein as Harry Potter, full of nonstop action, magical creatures, and the reality that was Queen Victoria’s England.” –The Reading Café

MY THOUGHTS:

THE GRYPHON CHRONICLES: THE DARK PORTAL by E. G. Foley is a fantastic Fantasy/Fiction/ Adventure for Young Readers, ages 10 & up set in Victorian era. #3 in “The Gryphon Chronicles” but can be read as a stand alone. However, I would suggest reading the other two in this series, only because it is an awesome series! See, “The Lost Heir” and “Jake and the Giant”. An ex-pickpocket and orphan becomes an heir! Jake Everton, heir of Griffon finds himself and his friends in Wales,on this adventure, where something in attacking humans and the magic folk. Deep within a Dwarven mine, things go bump in the night, and good vs evil. Filled with yet more adventure for Jake and his friends. It also has Dwarfs, fairies, unicorns, mystery, magic, supernatural mysteries, and righting wrongs, Jake also wants to follow in his parents footsteps, and become a Lightrider. Oh yeah, have I mentioned he has a pet Gryphon! Jake’s first year with a family for Christmas is coming up soon! What will be his next grand adventure, I wonder. I will have to keep reading to find out,I suppose. But do be warned, some parts may be a bit scary for younger readers,so if they are reading alone, check on them often. Well written with engaging characters, as the story continues you see new characters, with more magic and more adventures for Jake and his friends. If you enjoy Harry Potter, or maybe even Fairy Tales, you will enjoy “The Gryphon Chronicles”. This is an awesome series, from the first book to this one, no mistaking this author’s writing skills. What a fantastic job of storytelling as the adventure continues! I have enjoyed this series and look forward to the next grand adventure. Received for an honest review from the author.

November 29, 2013 NY Times and USA Today bestselling author E.G. Foley presents The Gryphon Chronicles, a new series of historical fantasy adventure novels that’s as much fun for grownups as it is for kids!

Big Trouble…

Reunited with his aristocratic magical relatives, and finally getting used to his own supernatural powers, orphaned ex-pickpocket Jake Everton, the young Lord Griffon, travels on his first-ever holiday to beautiful Norway. There, at an amazing (steampunk!) Invention Convention, his cousin Archie, the boy genius, plans to unveil his marvelous new flying machine to the scientific world.

But legends of the Viking Age die hard in Scandinavia. Danger strikes as famous Victorian scientists start mysteriously disappearing. When Archie vanishes, too, Jake races to the rescue. With the help of his trusty pet Gryphon, he tracks the kidnapper to his lair—only to come face-to-face with an angry Norse giant!

From the whimsical steampunk oddities of the Invention Convention to wondrous worlds of Norse mythology, join Jake and his friends on a giant-sized adventure full of hair-raising dangers and big laughs!

MY THOUGHTS:

THE GRYPHON CHRONICLES: JAKE AND THE GIANT by E. G. Foley is a delightful Fantasy/Fiction/Adventure for Young Readers ages, 10 and Up. Set again in the Victorian Era. #2 in “The Gryphon Chronicles” but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would recommend reading book 1, “The Lost Heir”. The adventure continues in “Jake and The Giant”. Jake Everton, now Lord Griffon, has finally be re-united with his parents, and is coming to grips with his magical powers. When Jake’s cousin Archie, goes missing, along with other scientists, Jake races to the rescue. He comes face-to-face with a Norse giant. Filled with Norse mythology, magical creatures, a flying machine, legends, and of course a bit of danger and lots of adventure. Harry Potter has nothing on Jake and his friends. A wonderful Historical fantasy for young and old readers alike. Another hit for this amazing author. Well done. What an engaging story from beginning to end with a feel of Steampunk, historical,Fantasy and Adventure all mixed into one grand adventure. BIG TROUBLE comes to Jake and his friends in “Jake and the Giant”. Another must read! Received for an honest review from the author.

MY THOUGHTS:

THE GRYPHON CHRONICES: THE LOST HEIR by E. G. Foley is an intriguing Fantasy/Fiction/Adventure set in Victorian  London. # 1 in “The Gryphon Chronicles”. What a beginning. MY THOUGHTS:

Lady Jenny’s Christmas Portrait by Grace Burrowes is an interesting Regency Christmas Historical Romance.  (The Duke’s Daughters, #5) (Windham, #8),but can be read as a stand alone. This is Elijah Harrison and Jenny Windham’s story.  A heartwarming romance filled with Christmas magic and passion. Ms. Burrowes is a masterful storyteller whose characters are complex, but passionate, strong but vulnerable. While, Ms. Burrowes has written several books about the Windham family, she never ceases to amaze me with how each and everyone of them are unique in their own way,and each has their own path to follow. If you enjoy historical romance, Regency Christmas, yuletide blessings than, you will surely enjoy “Lady Jenny’s Christmas Portrait”. A great anytime read! MY THOUGHTS:

MINE TO KEEP by Cynthia Eden is a intoxicating Romantic Suspense. #2 in the “Mine” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See “Mine to Hold”.  This is Skye and Trace’s story and what a story!  Fast paced, action packed, sexually intoxicating story of love, sacrifice, and a stalker. Skye, has a stalker, but no one will believe her. She turns to the only person she knows can help her, Trace, her child friend and ex-lover. But will he believe her and help her? Trace will do anything to protect Skye. For after all these years he still loves Skye to distraction. A set on the edge of your seat read from beginning to end. It keeps you guessing, does she really have a stalker or is she doing these things to herself for attention. Filled with danger, suspense and hot, sizzling passion, that heats up the page. I love Ms. Eden’s Romantic Suspense and “Mine to Keep” will having you turning pages and sitting up all night to read. It was a quick read to me,but than I couldn’t not put it down until I find the real story…. A must read for any Romantic Suspense readers. Ms. Eden is a masterfully storyteller. One who draws the reader into the story and holds them there with her engaging characters and her intriguing plots. A must read!! I can hardly wait to read the next in this intoxicating series. From the author of The Three Weissmanns of Westport, a wise, clever story of New York in the ’60s

It’s 1964. Eleven-year-old Fin and his glamorous, worldly, older half sister, Lady, have just been orphaned, and Lady, whom Fin hasn’t seen in six years, is now his legal guardian and his only hope. That means Fin is uprooted from a small dairy farm in rural Connecticut to Greenwich Village, smack in the middle of the swinging ’60s. He soon learns that Lady—giddy, careless, urgent, and obsessed with being free—is as much his responsibility as he is hers.

So begins Fin & Lady, the lively, spirited new novel by Cathleen Schine, the author of the bestselling The Three Weissmanns of Westport. Fin and Lady lead their lives against the background of the ’60s, the civil rights movement, and the Vietnam War—Lady pursued by ardent, dogged suitors, Fin determined to protect his impulsive sister from them and from herself.

From a writer The New York Times has praised as “sparkling, crisp, clever, deft, hilarious, and deeply affecting,” Fin & Lady is a comic, romantic love story: the story of a brother and sister who must form their own unconventional family in increasingly unconventional times.

MY THOUGHTS:

FIN & LADY by Cathleen Schine is an interesting Coming of Age/Family. This review is for the audio CD version. It is the tale of Fin’s Coming of Age during the 1960’s in Greenwich Village, New York,Italy, and Capri. Orphaned at eight years old, it takes you as he matures.  An emotional story of Fin,his half-sister and guardian Lady Hadley, their maid,Mabel and many more characters.  You will laugh, you will cry and you will say “what the heck”. It is a story of a family, the love of a brother and sister left orphaned at young ages,on their own and finding out what matters the most in life. As both Fin and Lady matures, through trials, disappointments, and laughter, they grow closer as well. Lady is a wealthy, glamorous, itinerant and is only in her twenties, when she becomes Fin’s guardian.  Fin’s grows up in a rather unconventional setting, for Lady is careless, care-free and irresponsible. The story takes place during the 1960’s, the swinging sixties period, the civil-rights movement, the Vietnam War and so much more. While the audio version is interesting, the voice doesn’t really change during the telling,no specific emotion noted. With that said if you are a fan of Cathleen Schine, I would recommend getting the audio version, there is a bonus interview at the end. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

MY THOUGHTS:

BECKMAN: LORD OF SINS by Grace Burrowes is a delightful Regency Historical Romance . Book 3 in the “Lonely Lords” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “Darius”, and “Nicholas”. A riveting love story from beginning to end. Fast paced with passion, secets, and love. I love this author’s stories and the “Lonely Lords” series shows her talent as a storyteller. “Beckman: Lord of Sins” is story of grief, pass affairs, guilt and the power of love. NICHOLAS by Grace Burrowes is an exciting Regency Historical Romance. #2 in “The Lonely Lords” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See,”Darius”. With secrets, and more secrets, senual tension, betrayal, misunderstandings and finding love. Letting go of the past can be hard for some but to find happiness there must be forgiveness and healing.
