My thoughts:

Highland Flame by Mary Wine is another fabulous Highland Romance. #4 in her exciting “Highland Weddings” series, but it can be read as a stand alone.

Laird Diocail Gordon just inherited uncle’s run down castle and the rag-tag Gordon clan. He is anot impressive warrior but, can he prove himself capable of being a good laird, not just a good warrior, and will he be able help his clan prosper and re-build. Lady Jane Stanley, a widow, who is determined to return to England, at all cost, including tromping, on foot, in the cold, wild Scottish Highlands. Nearly , frozen and hungry, she comes into the midst of a troop of dangerous Highland warriors. And thus this captivating tale begins…..well there is more to it than that, but I don’t wish to give anything away….

Well written Scottish Romance with captivating, interesting and entertaining characters. The plot flows seamlessly and is well excuted. I loved “Highland Flame”! Put the feisty, determined,red-haired, beauty, Jane with the myterious, no non-sense, handsome, Diocail and sparks fly off the pages.

Ms. Wine definitely brings forth a story rich in history, Highland traditions, and one that captives as well as, keeps you glued to the pages of a fast paced tale of love, passion, treachery and determination. Mesmerizing! ! Another well done, Highland Romance by Mary Wine. Never a dull moment for sure!

THE DEAD OF HAGGARD HALL by Marie Treanor…a review

The Dead of Haggard Hall (Darke of Night Book 1) by Marie Treanor

Date of Publication: July 26, 2016

Spirit possession is easy to remedy. Possession of the heart is another matter.

Darke of Night, Book 1

After vicar’s widow and natural medium Barbara Darke loses her respectable teaching position, she reluctantly agrees to become companion to her former pupil Emily, now the bride of young Sir Arthur Haggard.

Once settled at Haggard Hall, Barbara finds her friend is beset by ghostly voices and unexplained deaths. In a maelstrom of dark spirits and wicked emotions, Barbara battles to lay Emily’s ghosts to rest-both hampered and helped by Arthur’s skeptical cousin Patrick, who provokes and attracts her in equal measure.

It would be a mistake to trust a secretive, guilt-ridden man suspected of driving his wife to suicide, if not outright murdering her. And it could well be lethal to give in to her own desires, confused as they often are with the lusts of the dead.

But Arthur and Emily are in genuine physical danger, and suspicion is falling closer and closer to Patrick-the man who haunts Barbara’s sensual dreams. The man who stands to inherit Haggard Hall.

Warning: Contains a medium whose body is open season for spirit possession, and a scandal-ridden journalist who only believes what he can see-and touch.

A Lady’s Rules of Etiquette When Kidnapping a Gentleman:

1. A lady must obtain a small vial of laudanum and a sturdy length of rope.
2. Once subdued, the gentleman should be bound securely.
3. At no point should the lady leave a sharp implement within the gentleman’s reach.
4. Should rule #3 be neglected, the lady must prepare for things to go dreadfully wrong.
5. In such a case, a lady must keep her countenance and under no circumstances should she submit to his charms and surrender her heart…

Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham is far more skilled at needlework than she is at kidnapping. But when her best friend begs her to distract the new Earl of Hastings, she reluctantly agrees. Regrettably, the earl is just as clever as he is handsome and before long, he is free of his restraints and not at all pleased…

As one of London’s most notorious rogues, Matthias Hart often finds himself in curious situations. Though he has never woken up drugged, bound, and hidden away in a remote Scottish cottage. Normally, he would welcome such a diversion, but his beautiful captor is young, witty and all-too-innocent. When he finally frees himself, all he wants is revenge and her complete surrender…

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl (What Happens In Scotland #3) by Kate McKinley, but can be read as a stand alone. I would highly recommend reading the entire series, simply for the pleasure. See, #1, HOW TO LOSE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS (Lucas and Pippa) and #2, SO I MARRIED A HIGHLANDER (Alec and Evelyn). And of course, #3 THE CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR CAPTIVE EARL (Gwen and Matthias).

Matthias Hart, Earl of Hastings, one of London’s most notorious rogues. Is about to meet the challenge of his life….Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham. Although, he’s never been in such a precarious situation before, drugged, bound, and hidden away in a remote Scottish cottage. Thus, begins the story of Gwen and Matthias!

A quick read, only about 197 some pages, but packed full of deliciousness and witty banter. What a great Regency Romance!

Ms. McKinley has created a story with witty banter, mixed with some serious revelations, for both Gwen and Matthias. What a maelstrom of emotions, readers will find in Ms. McKinley’s creative writing! The relationship between Gwen and Matthias is precarious, but was lonely and unfulfilled, before meeting each other. They have based their experience entirely on dysfunctional relationships, they have been associated with, until lately.

Well written with engaging, well-developed, but flawed characters and families. The storyline is somewhat unique, masterfully written, emotionally charged with some laugh out loud moments, and a few twists and turns. A bit of mystery and a touch of suspense, makes for some mesmerizing and adventurous reading.

Fans of Regency Romance, fun characters, fanciful longings, determination, mistaken identity, and a misunderstand or two with a most misbehaving Earl, I believe will enjoy “The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl”.

Ms. McKinley is an amazing, masterful storyteller, who draws the reader into the story and captures their hearts. A must read Regency Romance with witty banter and interesting characters. I can’t wait for the next adventure from Ms. McKinley!

CHASING THE OTHER TISDALE by Jessica Jefferson is an exciting Regency Historical Romance. #3 in the “Regency Bloom” series, but can be read as a stand alone. Let me say, first, this is a new author to me, and I absolutely loved her writing.

Meet, the other Tisdale sister, Lillian and Will Colton, a definite Rake with a family secret. Will is forced to leave England, and Lillian, who thought he was beginning to have feelings for her. Lillian is left with a broken heart.

Two years later… Will returns to England, after his father has died. Will is hoping to re-ignite the feelings between himself and Lillian. Lillian has other ideas, she can’t bear to have Will engage her heart again and leave her. She may survive this time.

But Will, is determine to win Lillian’s heart again and find his father’s true identity, without dishonoring his mother’s name and life. Can love prevail?

“Chasing the Other Tisdale” is a fast paced tale of secrets, love and romance. This is an easily embraced tale with witty banter, and engaging characters. The romance between Will and Lillian is passionate and emotionally contacted. The storyline, may be an old one, but it is written in a unique matter, with an intriguing and interesting plot.

I would highly recommend this title to anyone to enjoys a great Historical romance, Regency romance with a twist. An enjoyable and satisfying read from beginning to the very last page.  A must read!

Barnes & Nobles:

ONCE A WALLFLOWER, AT LAST HIS LOVE by Christi Caldwell is a wonderful Regency Historical Romance set in 1808 England. #6 in the ” Scandalous Seasons”, but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would suggest reading the others in this amazing series.

Meet, Miss Hermione Rogers, aka, Mr. Michael Michaelmas and Sebastian Fitzhugh, the 5th Duke of Mallen. While, Hermione, is a notorious storyteller, she is also a wallflower, feisty, strong-willed and determined to protect and support her siblings, in the only way she know how other than marriage, by writing her stories. You, see, no marriage minded gentleman even looks at her, she is too opinionated, that is until Sebastian Fitzhugh enters her life. Sebastian, is serious, and know his responsibilities and holds them dear.

An enjoyable read with likeable characters and an interesting storyline. Ms. Caldwell has once again written a story that grips the reader, with her comfortable, passionate story, her engaging, and likeable characters.

While, this story, is filled with emotions, it also, has it humorous moments, when her younger brother and sister, first meet Sebastian, for instance. Ms. Caldwell, addresses the issues of having a mental handicapped sibling, Hermoine’s  elder sister, Elizabeth, due to a fever years prior and what happens to her, that may cause a scandal, with honesty, consistency and seriousness. The secondary characters help to carry the story.

An enjoyable read! Well written with emotion, drama, and love. Romance blended with family tragedy and love. Well done!

*The sensual content was confined within the marriage bed*. I enjoyed that as well.

In late-nineteenth-century Chicago, visionary retail tycoon Marshall Field made his fortune wooing women customers with his famous motto: “Give the lady what she wants.” His legendary charm also won the heart of socialite Delia Spencer and led to an infamous love affair.

The night of the Great Fire, as seventeen-year-old Delia watches the flames rise and consume what was the pioneer town of Chicago, she can’t imagine how much her life, her city, and her whole world are about to change. Nor can she guess that the agent of that change will not simply be the fire, but more so the man she meets that night.…

Leading the way in rebuilding after the fire, Marshall Field reopens his well-known dry goods store and transforms it into something the world has never seen before: a glamorous palace of a department store. He and his powerhouse coterie—including Potter Palmer and George Pullman—usher in the age of robber barons, the American royalty of their generation.

But behind the opulence, their private lives are riddled with scandal and heartbreak. Delia and Marshall first turn to each other out of loneliness, but as their love deepens, they will stand together despite disgrace and ostracism, through an age of devastation and opportunity, when an adolescent Chicago is transformed into the gleaming White City of the Chicago’s World’s Fair of 1893.

WHAT THE LADY WANTS: A Novel of Marshall Field and the Gilded Age by

Renee Rosen is an interesting Historical Fiction/Gilded Age set in 1871-1906 Chicago. It is a story based on the infamous love affair between Marshall Field, retail  tycoon and the socialite, Delia Spencer,  their spouses, adultery, high society, gossip, the Great Chicago Fire aftermath, the early days of Marshall Field & Company and everything in between.

Charming, womanizer Marshall Field was a visionary, who made his fortune charming socialites of High society, but his most famous affair was with Delia Spencer. What a tangled, compelling and emotional read. Filled with devastation, the Gilded Age of Chicago, heartbreak, tragedy, suicide, scandal and gossip.

It is a captivating tale to be sure. Addictive and entertaining as well. Emotional at times, filled with heartbreak, labor organizers, the Haymarket Riots, and many life changing decisions. One of the most annoying parts of this tale to me was the value the Prairie Avenue placed on their set, above all others. Not withstanding the adultery Marshall and Delia engaged in with little regard to their spouses and families. Delia was devoted to Marshall. While, I believe or hope she had a genuine love and friendship, for her own spouse, Arthur Spenser. I understand it was very difficult for women in the 1800-1900’s to get a divorce, but I do not condone adultery, and infidelity. Which, I suppose is what made it such a captivating and emotional read.

Well written with tack and intrigue. The characters were engaging and interesting. The storyline was intriguing, captivating and emotional. If you are looking for a HEA ending, not so much so with this read. Although, it has it’s moments. An enjoyable and unique read.

September 8, 2014
With five siblings to care for, Prudence Hixsby’s duty comes first, even if it means becoming a spinster. When the eldest – and most cherished – of her younger brothers decides to join the war, however, Prudence is determined to keep him safe. So she strikes a bargain with an old acquaintance: her body in exchange for her brother’s safety.
In the dead of the night, she slips into the bed of a man whose touch is both fierce and passionate… little knowing she’s just seduced the wrong man.
Harrison Carlisle, the Duke of Sutcliffe, never imagined that the lovely Prudence would honour his bed, or just how bewitching those lush curves could be. Yet he keeps a gentleman’s silence. After all, a spy for the Crown can ill afford to marry. But when Prudence’s brother is killed, they find themselves uniting to track down the traitorous murderer. And while death lurks within the shadowy world of espionage, there is also passion… and the unbidden thrill of a seduction!
A Masquerading Mistresses Novella
A fast paced novella, which is well written with an intriguing storyline and well-defined and engaging characters. Part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone easily. Another hit by the amazing storyteller. A perfect Fall read! Filled with danger, romance, and intrigue. And if course the right mixture of intrigue, seduction and romance. I would highly recommend.
