My thoughts:

His Highland Love by Willa Blair is another fantastic read in her new series, “His Highland Heart”. While, book 2 in this thus far amazing series, it can be read as a stand alone. Set in France and Scotland.

Product Description

Her daughter’s kidnapping. A metro bombing. Going undercover. Zoey Morningstar’s trip to Paris wasn’t to include any of these things. But it does. Although Jean-Luc LeFèvre rescues her little girl from the Red Hand, the threat to her child continues. Zoey is grateful to Jean-Luc, but her need to help capture the abductors must override any desire she feels for the handsome agent with his own brand of justice…and danger. Jean-Luc is not pleased when Zoey, a crime scene photographer with just enough training to get them killed, is assigned to work with him in the French Counterterrorism Unit. Not only does she take too many risks, she drives him to distraction. As Zoey and Jean-Luc track the terrorists, their feelings for each other grow as fast as the danger. Jean-Luc is determined to protect Zoey and her daughter, but the sinister grasp of the Red Hand is strong and far-reaching. It will take more than love to keep them all safe.

My thoughts:

Jean-Luc: Once is Never Enough by Vonnie Davis is an intriguing story. #2 in “Paris Intrigue”, while I feel some readers may wish to read #1 “Niko:Licensed to Kill”, before reading this, it’s not necessary to fully enjoy “Jean-Luc”. What a Romantic Suspense!

Zoey Morningstar, her child Taylor Ann, Jean-Luc LeFèvre, the Red Hand Terrorist group and the French Counterterrorism Unit, makes for some exciting and thrilling reading. Zoey and Jean-Luc’s chemistry is explosive and steamy.

Well written with well developed, realistic and engaging characters and a plot to literally die for, Vonnie Davis will certainly capture your heart in “Jean-Luc”. Definitely a heart thumping, action packed tale, set in Paris. With intrigue, danger, murder, terrorist, a kidnapping, suspense, passion and a race for time, readers will be awe stricken, as Ms. Davis writes a story that plays out like, a movie. I was glued to the pages from the beginning to end. This is one of those stories that lingers in one’s mind, long after the ending.
An unbelievable realistic story, that felt as if it was pulled straight out of todays headlines!

I love Vonnie Davis’ complex, compelling, intriguing and powerful stories. She is an expert with characterization, descriptions and her plots are simply mesmerizing.
You don’t wish to miss this action packed Romantic Suspense! I can’t wait to read the next book in the “Paris Intrigue”. An amazing story! The battle of the sexes helped carry “Jean-Luc” along. Well done,Vonnie Davis!!

 MY THOUGHTS:

THE CAPTIVE by Grace Burrowes is a captivating Regency Historical Romance. Book 1 in “The Captive Hearts Trilogy”, and what a beginning!

This is the story of Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia and Gillian, Countess of Greendale. Christian was captured and tortured by the French for over a year. Now, he is free and he wants revenge against his captors. He survived by his vow to himself, of vengeance and justice, only to come home to find his wife and son dead, his young daughter has suffered much from his absence. Now she either refuses or can’t speak. There is, of course more to that amazing story! You many guess, but the answers come toward the end.

Gillian, is a widow, finally, after eight years of abuse, from the older Greendale and now suspect in his death. His heir, Christian’s cousin, Marcus, has made sure of that. Oh, but all is not what it seems on that front. Greed can do so much to destroy innocent lives!

A captivating, fast paced tale of intrigue, suspense, mystery and passion. Two tortured souls find comfort, justice, passion, a safe haven in each others arms and everlasting love. Ms. Burrowes blends the right mixture of suspense, tragedy, passion and romance to keep the reader turning pages way into the night. I truly wish to see the others in this series, come to fruition. The true magic of this tale is the love, and compassion shown throughout this story by both Christian and Gillian.  Not just another romp through Regency England but a romp on one’s heart! Well done, indeed! Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Review~ Gargoyle: Three Enchanting Romance Novellas by multiple authors

Title: Gargoyle: Three Enchanting Romance Novellas

Publisher: SB Group

Publication Date: July 11, 2013

Genre: Paranormal

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

The mysterious lives of gargoyles.

They don’t just hang out on buildings.

They right wrongs. They wreak havoc.

And they change the lives of unsuspecting people who never see them coming.

The hero…

Craig knows that Bea is in trouble. But Craig can’t do anything about it–because he’s a garden gargoyle and Bea can’t hear his warnings. When unexpected visitors arrive to help, Craig finds the power he had all along. Now the neighborhood will never be the same.

The touchstone…

When a thunderstorm transports software expert Rose Waldman to thirteenth century France, she meets hunky stonemason Julien, who is secretly creating a gargoyle in defiance of his master mason. Can independent gadget loving Rose trust her life and heart to Julien, and can she really never go home again?

And the freak just trying to get along…

Sentenced to burn at the stake for sorcery, Merofled volunteers to help jaded warrior Alaric kill a gargoyle that threatens her village. But Merofled soon discovers the gargoyle is not a monster at all. It’s a misfit just like her. Can she persuade Alaric to spare the gargoyle-and herself?

My Thoughts:

Although I am a huge paranormal fan, this was my first foray into gargoyles. I have discovered it was not the place to start. I have no doubt that there are some good gargoyle stories out there, but these particular three lacked depth and eloquence.  However, this may be an unfair judgment.  I have not read any other works by these authors, and due to the short nature of novellas, there is not much room to flesh out a story as much as one would potentially like.  There was some imagination evident in the storylines, with each story having its own unique perspective.

Craig, being the sentient, yet immobile object that he is, tries unsuccessfully to communicate and protect his owner, Bea. Out of nowhere come these “gods” that awaken the powers of mobility and flight that aid him in his objective. There were a lot of minimally explained characters and happenings in this short story, and it was slightly difficult to follow at times. Some of these were just downright unbelievable, even given the fact that it’s a paranormal novella.

The second story, again- too little explanation and too much conflict compressed into too little story. The gargoyle wasn’t the paranormal element in this story; it was merely the object of connection between Rose and Julien. I liked Julien’s character a lot more than Rose. He seemed to have more depth, honesty, and morality than she did and I was able to feel some connection to him as a character. Rose seemed slightly self-indulgent, and it was obvious she was a modern-day woman (not meant as a compliment). I wish the time travel element had been explained a little better, not just “BAM!- you’re in the 13th century,” and then “BAM!- you’re back, and you brought him with you.”

I didn’t even finish the third story.  I got about half-way in, and it never got interesting, so I gave up. This one also takes place in the middle ages, and Merofled is saved from being burned as a witch, merely because she agrees to help rescue a farmer’s son from a gargoyle. Seems to me, just agreeing to help in that situation would make her accusers even surer of her witchery. She and the priest assigned to carry out her sentencing then follow the farmer to locate the son. I didn’t get any farther than that, because the farmer’s prejudice was irritating, and I couldn’t become very sympathetic to any of their issues.

AD 1022
A stolen woman of rare qualities…
Seized by marauders and taken to the icy northlands by the wolf-eyed Viking warrior, Helena will do whatever it takes to earn her freedom and return to France.
A mighty Viking Chieftain…
Betrayal has turned Hakan’s heart to ice, but the spirited Frankish maid warms him in a way he’s never known. The spell she weaves leaves them both breathless, but can he keep his promise to return her home even if it means he’ll lose his precious jewel forever?
MY THOUGHTS:
NORSE JEWEL by Gina Conkle is an exciting Viking/Medieval Historical  Romance set in AD 1022. A quick read with engaging characters and an interesting plot. A Fresh look at the Vikings marauders and their captives. Filled with adventure, betrayal, healing, forgiveness, and the power of love with sweet romance. Join Hakan,a Viking marauder and Norse Chieftain and his Frankish captive(Thrall), Helena, on a journey of love and secrets. Some long secrets finally come to life. What happens when a heathen and a God fearing captive/maid find each other, watch out for the sparks. Very limited sexual conquest, but they do have powerful sensual tension between them, that did not bother me in the least. I thought Hakan a bit to lenient with his captive slave,Helena, considering he was reputed to be a ruthless and cold hearted raider,as compared to other slave owners. Helena basically ruled the roost, sorta of speaking. An overall good read and an author I will follow, for I would love to see what happens next in Hakan and Helena’s lives and the lives of the other Norse raiders. Hakan’s ,best friend, and second in command betrays him and his family. While I enjoyed this story you are left with many unanswered questions about Hakan’s family, his King, and his country. I see another installment coming,or I hope so anyway. I felt the ending was a bit rushed, but an overall great read! Received for an honest review from the publisher.
