*From the B&N*

From the bestselling author of It Happened at the Fair comes a historical love story about a lady doctor and a Texas Ranger who meet at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Saddled with a man’s name, the captivating Billy Jack Tate makes no apologies for taking on a man’s profession. As a doctor at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, she is one step closer to having her very own medical practice—until Hunter Scott asks her to give it all up to become his wife.

Hunter is one of the elite. A Texas Ranger and World’s Fair guard specifically chosen for his height, physique, character, and skill. Hailed as the toughest man west of any place east, he has no patience for big cities and women who think they belong anywhere but home…

Despite their difference of opinion on the role of women, Hunter and Billy find a growing attraction between them—until Hunter discovers an abandoned baby in the corner of a White City exhibit. He and Billy team up to make sure this foundling isn’t left in the slums of Chicago with only the flea-riddled, garbage-infested streets for a playground. As they fight for the underprivileged children in the Nineteenth Ward, an entire Playground Movement is birthed. But when the Fair comes to an end, one of them will have to give up their dream.

Will Billy exchange her doctor’s shingle for the domesticated role of a southern wife, or will Hunter abandon the wide open spaces of home for a life in the “gray city,” a woman who insists on being the wage earner, and a group of ragamuffins who need more than a playground for breathing space?

MY THOUGHTS:

FAIR PLAY by Deeanne Gist is an interesting Christian Historical  Fiction set in 1893 Chicago. #2 “It Happened at the Fair”, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “It Happened at the Fair”.

Billy Jack Tate, is a female Doctor in 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, which is odd enough for this era, with her male’s name and her desire to have her own medical clinic, she is one step closer to her dreams until one Hunter enters her world.

Hunter, is a Texas Ranger and World’s Fair guard, tough, abandoned as a baby and he isn’t inspired by big cities, or women who work in a man’s profession.

When Billy and Hunter team to help a foundling home in Chicago’s slums, they warm to each other and a child. Billy and Hunter, create the first Chicago playground for children of the streets. Love blossoms in more ways then one. The characters are engaging, and the storyline interesting. Ms. Gist, pulls readers into her stories and holds them there in awe. She brings Chicago alive through the pages of her stories. I love the pictures that are throughout the book, depicting the events. Well done! I would recommend this title for any one who enjoys Historical fiction, Chicago, Chicago’s World Fair and a wonderful tale of love, patience, and faith.

Because Rachel is Holly’s only known relative, she assumes that she will be her beloved niece’s guardian. However, custody is awarded to Lydia, a distant aunt who happens to be Amish. Just a week before Christmas, Rachel takes Holly to the Amish community in the hopes of persuading Aunt Lydia to relinquish custody. Instead, Lydia sets out to teach Holly to live according to the Amish way. Combining an Amish family saga with the anticipation of Christmas cheer and the promise of a budding romance, this newest Christmas story from beloved author Melody Carlson is sure to please.

MY THOUGHTS:
A SIMPLE CHRISTMAS WISH by Melody Carlson is an interesting inspirational Christmas Fiction. I simple love this author’s works and this was no different. With her usual finesse for life, love, Amish culture and holiday spirit, you can not go wrong with “A Simple Christmas Wish”. An emotional tale of tragedy,Christmas spirit, faith, family secrets and the Amish community. When tragedy brings Rachel and Miri together only a Christmas miracle can make it all seem quite possible, life, forgiveness and love. A must read Christmas novella. A quick, but fulfilling story! Gambling everything—including the family farm—Cullen McNamara travels to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with his most recent invention. But the noise in the fair’s Machinery Hall makes it impossible to communicate with potential buyers. In an act of desperation, he hires Della Wentworth, a teacher of the deaf, to tutor him in the art of lip-reading.

The young teacher is reluctant to participate, and Cullen has trouble keeping his mind on his lessons while intently watching her lips. Like the newly invented Ferris wheel, he is caught in a whirl between his girl back home, his dreams as an inventor, and his unexpected attraction to his new tutor. Can he keep his feet on the ground, or will he be carried away?

***

Cullen whistled and whipped off his hat, swinging it in the air, just like acres and acres of like-minded citizens. A hundred thousand handkerchiefs appeared, fluttering in the breeze like a sudden fall of snowflakes. With an exaggerated flourish, Cleveland pushed down the golden telegraph key and set off a chain reaction. Old Glory, whose silken folds had been bound, whipped open to catch the razor-sharp breeze. A massive cheesecloth veil fell from a ninety-foot gilded figure of the Republic posing in the waters of the Basin. A halo of electric lamps illuminated her crown. Her uplifted arms held a staff of Liberty and an eagle with wings spreading over the court. . . . The crowd quieted, momentarily awed into stillness, before letting out a cheer that lasted minutes. Then, like a lightning bolt fracturing the sky, they broke apart and dashed in a thousand directions, hurrying to take in the wonders set before them. The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition had officially begun.

MY THOUGHTS:

IT HAPPENED AT THE FAIR by Deeanne Gist is an exciting Historical Fiction set in 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago. Filled with inventors, deaf teachers, faith, healing, danger and love. Join, Cullen McNamara, a farmer and inventor and Della Wentworth, a deaf teacher he hires to tutor him in lip-reading. For his invention is loud and he will need to be able to read lips. But their attraction is growing stronger, he has a girl back home on the farm. A masterfully, immensely delightful storyteller,Ms. Gist will keep her readers enthralled as they read “It Happened At the Fair”. Another hit for this author. Written with her usual wit, and vivid descriptions, you feel as through you are at the World’s Fair in 1893, all the excitement and drama in Chicago during this time period. How exciting indeed! Oh, there are also wonderful, delightful pictures throughout the book,of the different area of the Fair. What a delight to read of Cullen and Della and their story of love, faith, determination and inventions. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Things are looking great for Greg Donner, a Chicago freelance writer. He’s got a terrific project, and he’s met the woman of his dreams — literally, his dreams (though they’re rather odd ones). But then, one night, he falls asleep and awakes . . . to the beginning of a nightmare he just can’t seem to wake up from. . . .

Ishmael, the book I’m best known for, was the product of a twelve-year struggle. The book right here, Dreamer, was written during the ninth year of that struggle — more or less to prove to myself that I really WAS a writer. Dreamer’s not Ishmael, of course (nothing will ever be Ishmael), but it IS a novel, and reading it with fresh eyes — as something written by a stranger — published and forgotten long, long ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s a damn good one.

MY THOUGHTS:

DREAMER by Daniel Quinn is an interesting, fast paced Psychological Thriller. It has many twists and turns with few predictable moments. A surprising Psychological Thriller related to all things….dreams. What is reality and what is a dream or nightmare as the case may be. Is reality a dream,a nightmare or a little of both? You must read “Dreamer” to find out as you follow,Greg Donner/Richard Iles, and Ginny Winters on a journey of danger, and finding answers that could change Greg/Richard’s life forever as well as Ginny’s. Move over “Silence of the Lambs” here comes the “Dreamer”. Fast paced! But be warned DO NOT read late at night…An intriguing read! Received for an honest review from the publisher.
