In studying couples with Achiever and Connector personalities, this duo illustrates how this common encounter can create a mutually satisfying relationship. MY THOUGHTS:

I WON’T TAKE THE MARK: A Bible Book and Contract for Children. HELPING CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THE BOOK OF REVELATION by KATHERINE ALBRECHT, EdD, Nurtured by Tiffany Daschke & Katina Michael, PhD is a wonderful Juvenile Nonfiction/Religion/Bible Stories/New Testament. What a wonderful and amazing book. It will help your little one understand the Book of Revelation. Outstanding in more ways than one. The illustrations are artful, vivid and descriptive in and of themselves. It is well written, easy to follow with corresponding scriptures, which help convey the warnings of John’s vision, in the Book of Revelation. It will help guide young readers to the teachings of Jesus. A wonderful book for a Children’s bible study group.

What a wonderful way to “nurture” your children, with the teaching from the New Testament. It book also “includes a frameable certificate with a vow to obey God and never take the mark of the beast.”

This book is a MUST have for any library, not just a Children’s library. I was thrilled with the knowledge I personally gained from the book. I absolutely love this book from beginning to end. Well done!!

MY THOUGHTS:

I liked this book because it talks about how you are going to change when you get older, what your bra should feel like for it to fit right, when puberty starts and what happens to your body during this time, the signs to look for, growing up and life. It also talks about social life. It is a very good book. It tells you about shaving, pimples, dimples(are on your face),showering, and deodorant. This book is suggested for age groups 9-13, which I agree with also. I enjoyed this book very much! Well written, easy to understand, however, some of the explanations where a little difficult for me to understand, as I am only 10 years old myself.  Received for an honest review from the author.

The FAMILY of JESUS

Coming July 1, 2014

Heart of the Story Collection – Book 1

For the first time ever, Karen brings you a fictional view of six of the family members of Jesus, all anchored by Scriptural truth, creating a life-changing and unprecedented emotional connection to the Bible.

You will develop an emotional connection to the family members of Jesus, learning about their lives and falling in love with Scripture along the way. Bible studies and devotionals abound, and in churches everywhere people gather to seek a deeper understanding of God’s Word and its application to their lives. But too often these studies engage only the analytic approach to Bible learning.

In The Family of Jesus, you will laugh, cry, and ultimately care more deeply about the Bible by helping you grasp the truths in Scripture not just with your mind, but with your heart. The characters in these short stories were among those closest to Jesus—Mary, Joseph, Jesus’ brother James, John the Baptist, Zechariah, and Elizabeth. Each has a compelling tale to tell. The Family of Jesus not only provides a deeper understanding of the relatives of our Savior, but also helps readers acquire tools that will draw them closer to Christ, to the Scriptures, and to each other.

MY THOUGHTS:

THE FAMILY OF JESUS by Karen Kingsbury is a spiritual Bible Study & Reference/New Testament/Biography. #1 in the “Life-Changing Bible Study Series/Heart of the Collection” series. An interesting take of Jesus’ relative.

In The Family of Jesus, Karen offers a fictional view of six of the family members of Jesus, all anchored by Scriptural truth, creating a life-changing and unprecedented emotional connection to the Bible.”

A collection of short stories. It will give you a connection to Jesus’ family you never thought to gain though reading the Bible. Some of the characters are said to be the closest to Jesus…Mary, Joseph, John the Baptist, Zechariah, Jesus’ brother James, and Elizabeth, each has a compelling tale to tell itself. Although, I had a difficult time understanding or getting into the story. I believe, it is more of a fictional telling of Jesus’ family, therefore, it was hard to wrap your mind around it and separate facts from fiction. It was difficult to embrace the concept. I love Ms. Kingsbury’s books but this one I had difficulty reading. I do plan to try to re-read at a later date. I understand it is a fictional tale of Jesus’ and his family that is to help the reader connect on a personal level with the Bible. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

REVIEW: GHOSTS OF NASCAR: The Harlan Boys and the First Daytona 500 by John Havick

Who won the first Daytona 500? Fans still debate whether it was midwestern champion Johnny Beauchamp, declared the victor at the finish line, or longtime NASCAR driver Lee Petty, declared the official winner a few days after the race. The Ghosts of NASCAR puts the controversial finish under a microscope. Author John Havick interviewed scores of people, analyzed film of the race, and pored over newspaper accounts of the event. He uses this information and his deep knowledge of the sport as it worked then to determine what probably happened. But he also tells a much bigger story: the story of how Johnny Beauchamp—and his Harlan, Iowa, compatriots, mechanic Dale Swanson and driver Tiny Lund—ended up in Florida driving in the 1959 Daytona race.
The Ghosts of NASCAR details how the Harlan Boys turned to racing cars to have fun and to escape the limited opportunities for poor boys in rural southwestern Iowa. As auto racing became more popular and better organized in the 1950s, Swanson, Lund, and Beauchamp battled dozens of rivals and came to dominate the sport in the Midwest. By the later part of the decade, the three men were ready to take on the competition in the South’s growing NASCAR circuit. One of the top mechanics of the day, Swanson literally wrote the book on race cars at Chevrolet’s clandestine racing shop in Atlanta, Georgia, while Beauchamp and Lund proved themselves worthy competitors. It all came to a head on the brand-new Daytona track in 1959.
The Harlan Boys’ long careers and midwestern racing in general have largely faded from memory. The Ghosts of NASCAR recaptures it all: how they negotiated the corners on dirt tracks and passed or spun out their opponents; how officials tore down cars after races to make sure they conformed to track rules; the mix of violence and camaraderie among fierce competitors; and the struggles to organize and regulate the sport. One of very few accounts of 1950s midwestern stock car racing, The Ghosts of NASCAR is told by a man who was there during the sport’s earliest days.

About the Author

When John Havick’s grandfather sold his car to local boy and aspiring racecar driver Johnny Beauchamp, the young Havick went to see how the car performed. Falling in love with the sport, he kept scrapbooks of newspaper articles and programs tracking the triumphs and defeats of Beauchamp, Tiny Lund, and many other successful racers from the town of Harlan, Iowa. Then he went away to high school and college, leaving his childhood hobby behind but never forgetting it. After a career teaching public policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he revived his interest in the sport and decided to tackle one of its longtime controversies: who really won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959? The result of years of research and scores of interviews, this book tells the whole story. John Havick lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

MY THOUGHTS:

GHOSTS OF NASCAR: The Harlan Boys and the First Daytona 500 by John Havick is an exciting Nascar/Non-Fiction. What a tale! Packed full of information, pictures, and so much more. You do not want to miss your chance to learn more on not only three boys from Halan, Iowa but on racing itself.

Three racers from Harlan, Iowa who competed in the Midwest and specifically in Council Bluffs, Iowa and the Omaha, Nebraska area: Johnny Beauchamp, Dale Swanson, and Tiny Lund.

So much more that just a story of race car drivers, but, their lives, expectations and careers. A tale of Nascar of yesteryear as well as today. Racers of yesterday and today will enjoy this story, I believe.  Rather you are new to Nascar or an old Nascar fan, you are sure to enjoy GHOSTS OF NASCAR. I did, and I have to say I am not a race fan frantic. Very educational as well as entertaining. A true treasure for any library. What a joy to read! Well done! Received for an honest review.

In The Softball Coaching Bible, Volume II, the NFCA has assembled a stellar lineup of coaches who share the insights that have helped them establish successful programs. This book presents the most comprehensive information on fielding, hitting, training, forming a coaching staff, and helping develop well-rounded student-athletes.

Biography

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) is the sport’s leading professional growth organization for coaches at all competitive levels of play. The NFCA works to formulate guiding principles, standards, and policies for conducting competitive fastpitch softball programs for girls and women. It encourages players to participate in softball with the highest tradition of competition and to become leaders in their fastpitch programs. The NFCA recognizes outstanding members through its Victory Club and Coach of the Year awards programs, in addition to All-Region, All-American, and Scholar-Athlete awards programs for members’ college and high school players. The NFCA also works with USA Today to produce polls for NCAA Division I, II, and III and high school softball teams, and it hosts collegiate tournaments and recruiting camps across the nation.
MY THOUGHTS:
THE SOFTBALL COACHING BIBLE: Volume II by National Fastpitch Coaches Association is an educational non-fiction/Softball/Coaching/Softball for Children. I must admit I was a little overwhelmed at first with all the information contained within these 357+ pages of knowledge, but the NFCA has put together a very comprehensive book with various areas of coaching including hitting, training and of coarse putting together a coaching staff.  Volume II picks up where Volume I left off, apparently. I have not read Volume  I, but found this was a very educational and informative novel. This group of talented coaches lend their coaching experience, for instruction, guidance and recommendations  to every coach for every aspect of coaching a softball team. A great resource! Very educational and informative. Received for an honest review from the publisher and Library Thing.

April 14, 1865. A famous actor pulls a trigger in the presidential balcony, leaps to the stage and escapes, as the president lies fatally wounded. In the panic that follows, forty-six terrified people scatter in and around Ford’s Theater as soldiers take up stations by the doors and the audience surges into the streets chanting, “Burn the place down!”

This is the untold story of Lincoln’s assassination: the forty-six stage hands, actors, and theater workers on hand for the bewildering events in the theater that night, and what each of them witnessed in the chaos-streaked hours before John Wilkes Booth was discovered to be the culprit. In Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination, historian Thomas A. Bogar delves into previously unpublished sources to tell the story of Lincoln’s assassination from behind the curtain, and the tale is shocking. Police rounded up and arrested dozens of innocent people, wasting time that allowed the real culprit to get further away. Some closely connected to John Wilkes Booth were not even questioned, while innocent witnesses were relentlessly pursued. Booth was more connected with the production than you might have known—learn how he knew each member of the cast and crew, which was a hotbed of secessionist resentment. Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination also tells the story of what happened to each of these witnesses to history, after the investigation was over—how each one lived their lives after seeing one of America’s greatest presidents shot dead without warning.

Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination is an exquisitely detailed look at this famous event from an entirely new angle. It is must reading for anyone fascinated with the saga of Lincoln’s life and the Civil War era.

MY THOUGHTS:

BACKSTAGE AT THE LINCOLN ASSASSINATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE ACTORS AND STAGEHANDS AT FORD’S THEATRE by Thomas A. Bogar is an interesting History set during the Civil War era. April 14,1865 was the date the “shot was heard around the theate”. This is the date President Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre. This is the untold story….

This is the day lives where changed forever, both on stage and off. A true-life thriller. Mr. Bogar shines the light on many questions about this date, April 14. With his research Mr. Bogar has stunning details involving more that Booth’s involvement in the assassination, there where more than a few suspects both inside and outside the Ford Theatre on  that fateful day in history.

There have been many books written on this topic, but few if any written on the actors, and stagehands who where present at Ford’s Theatre.  I was held spell-bound with this knowledge, the facts, and the historical research in writing such an undertaking. Well done! I would highly suggest this title, if your are a history buff, enjoy Civial War history, and/or the history of the assassination of President Lincoln. A new and fresh look at the “shot heard around the theatre”. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

October 14, 2013

General Henry Harley “Hap” Arnold is widely considered the father of the United States Air Force. But his long list of accomplishments doesn’t begin or end there. He was also the first and only five-star general of the US Air Force; one of the first US military aviators; the first American to carry air mail; and the architect of the war-winning air strategy of World War II.

In this new biography of one of the American military’s most towering figures, author Bill Yenne weaves the story of Hap Arnold’s life, from his youthful days as a cunning prankster to his sunset career as an elder statesman. All along, Yenne unfolds General Arnold’s life like the adventure story it is. A bold advocate for technological advancement, Hap Arnold was a powerful character in the golden age of aviation, an innovative warrior in the conflict that defined the modern era, and the creator of an entirely new branch of the US military.

Hap Arnold: The General Who Invented the US Air Force is a page-turning adventure biography for history buffs, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the events that shaped America and the world in the first half of the twentieth century.

MY THOUGHTS:
HAP ARNOLD: THE GENERAL WHO INVENTED THE U. S. AIR FORCE by Bill Yenne is an interesting History/U. S. Air Force. This is the story of General Henry Harley “Hap” Arnold, concerned the father of the modern United States Air Force. He is a five-star General.  Though, extensive research, interviews, and documentation he has brought Hap Arnold to life for the American people. He was or has been one of the neglected generals in American history, who served during World War II. Learning to fly from the famous Orville Wright,he predicted the Japanese would strike Pearl Harbor prior to the famous strike that took so many lives. What a fascinating story! I would suggest reading “Hap Arnold” for anyone who is interested in learning more on the U. S. Air Force, and on this interesting Military man. A must read!
