When sensei Ronin Black first encounters Amery Hardwick, the fire in her eyes ignites a sexual spark a thousand times better than the primal rush he used to get from mixed martial arts matches. She accepts his darker edges and admits to him that her desires aren’t as wholesome as he believed. And before long Ronin is grappling with emotions he’s never felt before….

Yet despite demanding Amery bare her body and soul to him, Ronin holds a part of himself back. When she learns Ronin’s secret and walks out, his life begins to unravel.  To regain her trust he must let go of his pride and prove to her that it’s more than passion binding them together.

My Thoughts:

A must-read if you have read Bound, the first book of the Mastered Series. If you haven’t, go find it before reading this one. You won’t regret it!

Ronin totally screwed up at the end of Bound by not telling Amery his family secret, leaving her to find out that and quite a bit more from his sister. Realizing this, he spends much of this book making up for that mistake and opening himself up to Amery, a first for Ronin.  She accepts his apologies and request to try again, but tries to hold herself back this time, thinking he’s just going to hurt her again.

Both struggle with trust and openness, but as they slowly gain each of these, their relationship strengthens and grows. The beauty of their personal growth and awe of each other exquisitely blends and may even slightly overshadow the erotic touches that continue with the shibari and kinbaku bondage they share. This makes Unwound that much better of a specimen in this genre, in my opinion. I like a good sex book every once in a while, but I enjoy them so much more when the characters have the depth that these do. Although billed as the conclusion to the series, there are quite a few hints at potential storylines between a few of the side characters. I think the author would definitely benefit by exploring some of these! (I can hope, anyway!!)

Genre: Christian Fiction

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

Is a simple life too much to ask for?

Ben thinks the retirement home where he works should be called “Heaven Can Wait a Little Longer While I Golf” instead of Heritage Gardens. But who asked him? He’s just the janitor, after all. Of course, his inept boss, the cantankerous residents, and even his attractive podiatrist friend don’t know one important thing about him: he was recently a cardiothoracic surgeon, not a broom-pushing custodian.

Ben is in search of a stress-free life with a little freedom from the past thrown in. But will it be that simple to escape who he used to be—and all he used to fear?

My Thoughts:

This book starts off kind of slow and kind of weird at the same time. Ben has a severe anxiety disorder that manifests itself with OCD tendencies and a preference for prime numbers. Although these tendencies don’t seem to interfere with his daily life as a custodian, he does recognize that it is keeping him from having many meaningful personal relationships. This book follows his journey to forgive himself for a tragedy that happened during his years as a surgeon. A tragedy that pushed him to distance himself from everyone he knew at that time, which is how he ended up at Heritage Gardens.

The reader will quickly realize that he cares deeply for the residents at the Gardens and will do anything to help them. His journey of self-forgiveness leads him to deepen many of his friendships at the Gardens and afterwards, and eventually to deepen his relationship with God. I enjoyed it once I got deeper into the story, and I think it is a great vacation read.

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

From a distance, the Harlans appear to be the perfect Southern family. Wealth and local fame mask the drama and dysfunction swirling through their family line. But as the summer heats up, a flood tide of long hidden secrets surface.

Devastation from a rape followed by the murder of two family members brings three generations of the Harlans together on their pecan plantation in Bay Spring, Alabama. Chief among them is Anniston, who by the time she turned thirteen thought she’d seen it all. But as her heart awakens to the possibility of love, she begins to deal with her loneliness and grief.

This tender coming-of-age tale, inspired by the story of Tamar in 2 Samuel 13, shows how true healing and hope comes only from God. Though our earthly family can wound and disappoint, our heavenly Father brings freedom to those long held captive through His mercy and grace.

My Thoughts:

Thought provoking at the very least, getting into the meat of this book took my full attention and focus. By chapter three I was hooked and found it difficult to put the book down. A Southern family in high standings, owners of a Southern Pecan Plantation where tragedy befalls them all, is the focus of this story and community. I most identified with Anniston, and was keen on her abilities to deal with these tragedies at such a young age. Her Aunt Comfort raped by her Uncle Cole. Anniston witnesses the shooting of her father by her Uncle Cole at the same time her father shoots her uncle, both dying, as her father was defending and attempting to protect his sister, Comfort. As the book unfolds, pieces of the puzzle are put together. It becomes clear that these are attached to the secrets of the matriarch of the family, Princella, who has worked so hard to cover up for many years. The cloud of these secrets has made Princella very mean and unforgiving if she does not get her way. Her husband, Vaughn is tender-hearted and based in an honest view of life.

In Anniston’s living through and processing all that has taken place, she finds a new friend that comes from abuse himself as a foster child and is older than she is. They build a relationship based on the freedom to be real. Hope is the thread that binds them. Hope for a better future, not just for each other, for Comfort and for life.

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

As Nurse Edie Spence embarks on her latest supernatural adventure from Cassie Alexander, the perils of the deep threaten to pull her under…

Edie Spence is in desperate need of a vacation—some R&R away from the craziness that shadows her as a nurse dealing with paranormal patients. But as she and her shapeshifter boyfriend, Asher, set sail on a cruise for Hawaii, they’ll realize that seasickness isn’t the only thing threatening their romantic getaway….

While on board, Asher comes face-to-face with Nathaniel, an old nemesis from his dark past. Asher is convinced he’s up to no good…especially when passengers start to come down with a mysterious illness unlike anything Edie and Asher have ever encountered. Soon Edie finds herself fighting for the life of the one person who means the most to her—Asher. As chaos explodes, will Edie be able to save their future together…or will this close encounter with the paranormal side be her last?

My Thoughts:

It was a little slow to get into for me, mainly because I don’t have the back-story from the first 3 books. However, the author did do a good job explaining some of the characters’ history and easily caught me up enough to enjoy the majority of the book. There isn’t a lot of deep thought to this one. It is a typical paranormal romance, with a lot of variety in its paranormal cast. I did like that there was more adventure and intrigue mixed in to prevent it from being just a romance.

Edie’s character was a little hard for me to connect with, though it’s kind of hard for me to pinpoint why. She seemed to be stuck in her own thoughts a lot. Although, to her credit, she did have quite a lot to think about regarding recent events that led up to this book and some issues that happened pretty rapidly early on. It was also kind of hard to connect with Asher, because you don’t get any of the story from his POV (if I’m remembering correctly). I like romances that go back and forth between the two main characters, and this book doesn’t do that much, if at all.  I did enjoy the book, and if you read the series, I’m sure you will like it even more. I gave it a three simply because I don’t see myself looking for the others in the series. I’ve met these characters and enjoyed this story of this particular point in their lives, but I don’t have the pull to learn any more about them.

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

I Didn’t Know – Identifying, Confronting & Overcoming Child Sexual Abuse – the title is indicative of the subject matter. In this book the author brings to the forefront the many faces of child sexual abuse; those of the victims and the abusers. Yvette Allen-Tatum boldly confronts her past of child sexual abuse to demonstrate that TRUE deliverance is possible. Yvette believes that we ALL (victims, abusers, enablers, nay-sayers, etc.) can OVERCOME the horrible effects of child sexual abuse.

This book proves that true healing is possible and necessary for us to become more than CONQUERORS through Christ Jesus.

As a community, we have to:

a). Identify Child Sexual Abuse – We have to talk about it (raise public awareness)

b). Know the signs & symptoms

c). Confront Child Sexual Abuse – Error on the side of caution – THE CHILD; Be quick to BELIEVE the victim and make all necessary inquiries

d). Studies show people are more apt to believe the innocence of the accused; this has to END

e). Overcome Child Sexual Abuse – We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the WORD of OUR TESTIMONY.

My Thoughts:

This is a heart-wrenching and eye-opening book, to say the least. The author exhibits definitive bravery in telling her story in this way. In doing so, she hopes to be a her catalyst for others to tell their stories, seeking help in coming to terms and dealing with their experiences and hopefully to receive justice for whatever has happened in their lives. And she does all this from a Christian viewpoint, and stresses the issue of forgiveness more than once.

This is a tough subject for anyone to discuss. For me, having the author do it from her personal standpoint lends more credibility on how to deal with these type of situations than reading a book by some child psychologist. Though, if I had this type of issue with one of my children, I would probably read everything I could get my hands on. I would recommend this book to both survivors of child abuse and friends and family of those survivors.

Dark Craving

Fueled by ancient magic—and enflamed by human desire—the Dragon King known as Hal can transform himself at will into one of the legendary winged creatures he is sworn to protect. But one thing he can never do is fall in love…with a mortal woman.

Night’s Awakening

The dark immortal warriors were never meant to experience human desire. But when Guy, a member of an ancient order of shape-shifting warriors, meets Elena—a mere mortal whose beauty and blind ambition shakes him to his core—all bets are off…

Dawn’s Desire

For centuries, the Dragon Kings have hidden their shapeshifting powers from the world. But when a mortal enemy threatens to expose them, the warrior Banan must leave his secret lair in the Highlands to risk his life for the dragons within—and resist the temptations of human love.

Passion’s Claim

Banan has been waiting for centuries for someone like Jane. Guy knew it was love at first sight with Elena. Can two Dragon Kings commit to two immortal women for eternity? Or does fate have something else in store?

My Thoughts:

There just aren’t enough Dragon stories out there in the paranormal universe, but Ms. Grant is rectifying that quickly! This is a combination of three previously released novellas from 2012. Her reasoning for the anthology is to re-introduce her series Dragon Kings, which will have three full-length e-books coming out this year, and they look to be extraordinary! The back-story she has created for this cast of Dragon Kings is pretty unique, and I hope she delves into it much further in the books yet to come.

These stories are quick and romantic, and just different enough to give the reader a good perspective of what its been like for the Kings since being betrayed by one of their own many centuries ago.  The women in these novellas are easy to connect with and the Kings are easy to admire and quickly fall for.  I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction and can’t wait to learn more about this new series!

SOMETIMES LOVE IS A MATTER

Sierra Brennan can inherit her great-uncle’s historic Chicago townhouse under one condition: She must live there for thirty consecutive days. What could possibly go wrong? As a writer and a ghost whisperer, Sierra has a vast imagination and a brave spirit. But not even she is prepared for the gorgeous—and naked—vampire who greets her at the door.

OF LIFE AND UN-DEATH

Ronan McCoy has spent the past century waiting to come home…to this house. The presence of the beautiful, brazen Sierra is one complication he doesn’t expect. The other is Hal, a dangerous ghost and original member of Al Capone’s gang who’s dead-set on revenge. What is a formerly indentured vampire supposed to do to get a moment’s peace? All he knows for sure is that he must protect Sierra from Hal. But once he has her in his arms, can he ever let her go? Life—and love—is becoming stranger than fiction for Sierra…and more delicious than she and Ronan could have ever imagined… in Love Your Entity.

My Thoughts:

The mixture of paranormal beings in this book just didn’t go over well for me. I’ve read multiple books with a similar mixture that seem to flow much better.  I haven’t read the other books in the series, so it might be better if you’ve read the others first.  It seemed like the author had a bit of ADD at times, too. Random people would just pop in and out of scenes with no introduction and no exit. The day Sierra moves in I think 15 different people come in and out of her house with-in two pages, and none of them make any sense.

I also think part of my reticence toward the book is due to the attitude of the main female protagonist. Sierra and I would not have meshed in real life, and did not mesh well while reading the book. Some of the things she did or said just didn’t seem like real-life reactions to me.  Ronan, on the other hand, was gorgeous and tough and best of all, a vampire. Him and his buddies were the saving grace of this book, and the only reason it got a 3.

Book Description Courtesy of Amazon:

Ella Harrow is trying to carve out a normal life for herself. Well, as normal as an art geek with psychic abilities can hope for. As museum docent and gift-shop manager, Ella is able to keep her distance from people—and her powers in check—while surrounding herself with the artifacts she loves. But how on earth is she supposed to act normal when a thousand-year-old statue on the museum’s terrace suddenly comes to life?

Not your ordinary gargoyle, Kees has been asleep for eons, waiting for a portent of evil to wake him from his slumber. Kees isn’t a vision; he’s a bat-winged guardian created to protect the world from the seven demons of the Dark. Somehow, Ella triggered his reawakening. Maybe the demons have been unleashed? Maybe his heart is finally ready to be chiseled open? The fate of the world isn’t carved in stone… yet.

My Thoughts:

This series reads like it’s going to be pretty good. Gargoyles aren’t your typical paranormal paramours, but Ms. Warren does an exceptional job of getting the reader captivated by the possibility. I was fascinated by the back-story of Kees and his brethren, the Guardians, and how they are the opposition to the Dark demons and their quest to takeover the world.  Ms. Warren has set up a seemingly insurmountable task for Guardians with the destruction of their home base and multiple murders of those who are meant to protect them in their dormant stone state.

The only reason I gave it a 3 instead of a 4 was Ella. We just didn’t click, and her character was like nails on a chalkboard to me throughout the entire story. If the rest of it hadn’t hooked me so deeply, I wouldn’t spend any more time on this series. However, she is but a small part in a large production, and I can overlook that when Book #2, Stone Cold Lover comes out late this summer. It is at the top of my “to read” list, for sure!

Forced by her half brother to use her dark gift of necromancy for profit, lovely Callista Hawthorne is determined to flee to her one chance for safety, her aunt in Scotland. With no hope of success unless she finds help on the long road north, she offers cursed shapechanger David St. Leger an irresistible bargain.

David—one of the mysterious Imnada—stalks the night streets of Regency London as a large black wolf. Renounced by his own kind, he spends his desperate rage on thieves and murderers. While Callista’s proposal will allow him to escape the terrible enchantment binding him, agreeing to her terms will force him into the treacherous world of the half-Fey Other, his clan’s ancient foes.

Drawn together by danger, David and Callista find passion in each other’s arms. But can they forswear the centuries of enmity separating their two races, and find a love they dare not even imagine?

My Thoughts:

This is a story of love that transcends centuries of mistrust and feuding between the Imnada and the Fey. Full of intrigue, mystery, romantic tension, and the like, this book will not disappoint. The world building in this novel is exceptional, and you can’t help but feel yourself walking through the streets of England in the 1800s. I absolutely love being able to fall head first into the worlds of my characters so easily; imagining the sights they see, the smells they smell, and most importantly, the feelings they feel.

I immediately felt sympathy for Callista, with her history of being controlled and manipulated by her brother, and the devastation of losing her mother so early. Your empathy for her only grows as she meets and bargains with David, and then it spreads to him as well. His story is no less tragic and leaves you waiting breathlessly for their HEA. As they journey to Scotland, you briefly meet the characters from the other books, but it will be just enough to get you hooked on their stories as well. I will definitely be searching out Book #1 and patiently waiting for Book #3.
