Book Description

England, 1814

When Winifred is rescued from her snow-stranded carriage by the notorious and reclusive Alistair, Marquess of Coventry, she is instantly drawn to him. Jilted by her betrothed and socially ruined by untrue rumors, Winifred is tired of paying for crimes she didn’t commit and decides to play the seductress London society claims she is. Thinking a night of passion shouldn’t leave any lasting effects, she instead finds her heart marked forever.

Six years later, Alistair is working for the Regent as a spy. A search for Napoleon’s English supporters leads him to the beguiling Winifred, recently widowed with a young son. He hasn’t forgotten how the unconventional beauty warmed his bed, and the heat between them rekindles immediately. The spymaster is determined to uncover all of plucky Winifred’s secrets. Especially the one regarding her son…

My Thoughts

A quick paced, romance rich, novella that will hook you from start to finish.

On a snowy Christmas Eve, Winifred finds herself stranded beside the road with little hope of a rescuer.  When the notorious Alistair, Marquess of Coventry, comes along, she has little choice but to go with him to his estate to wait out the storm.  She finds herself quite attracted to him, though his manner is less than amicable.  When the opportunity arises, Winifred decides to take advantage of the situation, and her already ruined reputation, and engage in a night of passion with the handsome, yet mysterious Marquess.  But she gets a little more than she’s bargained for.

Years later, Winifred, now a widow, finds Alistair on her doorstep, searching for maps belonging to her now deceased husband.  Knowing that he works for the Crown, she eventually decides to let him in, but knows she must protect her secret, her son.  As the two decide to engage in an affair, they each discover that they’ve fallen in love, but neither will admit it.  When a plot twist occurs that forces Winifred and her son Oliver to stay at a friend of Alistair’s house for their safety, Winifred’s secret comes out.  But when Alistair comes face to face with Oliver, will he be able to see what is so obvious?  And will he be able to accept his fate and admit his love for Winifred despite his dark and painful past?

What a fabulously written and intriguing novella by Robyn Dehart! Because it is a novella, it is a very quick read but has such an engaging storyline that you won’t want to put it down!  I loved the dynamic between Alistair and Winifred and how she saw through his gruff and quiet exterior to the wonderful, caring man within.  I also appreciated the way that Alistair’s childhood difficulties helped him learn how to interact and love Oliver.  It was such a touching moment when Oliver finally spoke that I was smiling as I read!  I loved everything about this novella and can’t wait to read more by Ms. Dehart!
