Elinor Abbott was only 14 years old when she and her father left England for America. Six years later, with war at their doorstep, she is being forced to return to her land of birth and a life amongst the aristocracy she abhors. A return to England also means facing the man who brutally attacked her as an adolescent. Viscount Easton came to the United States at the behest of His Majesty’s Army, for his last assignment. He was sent home early due to an injury and must face his new destiny as the heir to an earldom. An unexpected encounter with the unrefined beauty links Elinor and Easton together in society, and he must decide whether or not to save Elinor’s reputation or hold on to bachelorhood. Can Elinor navigate the perils of coming out in aristocratic England and still retain her sense of identity? Can Easton help her overcome her aversion to men or will her past keep her from facing her future?

SURRENDER THE PAST by Elizabeth Johns is an intriguing Regency Historical Romance set in 1814 America and England. #1 in the Loring-Abbott series, and what a beginning! An intriguing tale!

With a sexual assault, betrayal, secrets, healing, finding forgiveness, and finding love and happiness. A well written tale where with healing comes forgiveness. This is a new author to me, but will not be my last read by the author.

I believed the author handled the sexual assault on Elinor Abbott as an adolescent, with tact, poise and realism. After many years of angst, Ms. Elinor is willing, finally, to have a man touch her, and find her peace and happiness.

Viscount Easton, Captain in his Majesty’s Army sent to America for his last assignment, finds his Godfather, who happens to be Elinor’s father, and is deeply attracted to her, plus is faced with a Courts Martial for something done in America, when he returns to England.  Can Elinor overcome her past, and face her future?

You MUST read “Surrender Your Past”, you will not regret your choice of reading material. I read it in one setting, yes, it was that incredible. Be aware, while, it has a satisfying ending, it has a continuance coming soon, for the rest of the characters, for which I look forward to reading, tentatively titled “Seeking Redemption”. What does the future hold for Nataniel, Elinor’s attacker and his sister, who made her life horrible, when she returned to England? So far as Nataniel’s youthful attack on Elinor, well, I will just say justice is sometimes best served cold, hopefully. I don’t know if I could have done what Elinor did, but it seemed to worked for her.

Face a future with the man you love, overcome your past and be able to find peace, happiness and love, this a tale in itself. A unique tale to be sure! I loved the way Elinor found her inner strength to move forward and how Easton moved past his obligations to find his future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced story of the consequences of one’s past, letting go of the past to have a future, and how with healing comes acceptance and forgiveness. And of course, you have the consequences of war. The only fault I found was with the phrasing of words at times, which to me was more contemporary wording than Regency period. But, I would still, highly recommend “Surrender Your Past”. An enjoyable read from beginning to end.
