Former small-town girl Amery Hardwick is living her dream as a graphic designer in Denver, Colorado. She’s focused on building her business, which leaves little time for dating—not that she needs a romantic entanglement to fulfill her. When her friend signs up for a self-defense class as part of her recovery after an attack, Amery joins her for support. That’s where she meets him.
Ronin Black, owner of the dojo, is so drawn to Amery that he takes over her training—in public and in private. The enigmatic Ronin pushes Amery’s boundaries from the start, and with each new tryst, Amery becomes addicted to the pleasure and to him. But when Amery senses Ronin is hiding something, she questions her total trust in him, despite the undeniable thrill of his possession….
I was a little nervous to read this one because I don’t read much BDSM-type erotica. But I was feeling adventurous, and I was more than pleasantly surprised, fortunately. Amery and Ronin’s story focuses more on bondage than the other avenues of erotica and I feel it was an excellent introduction to the genre.
I describe it as an introduction because it delves so deep into the history, beauty, and artistic aspects of shibari and kinbaku. These are the main types of Japanese bondage that Ronin specializes in and the descriptions and demonstrations he gives really help Amery (being from a very limited, conservative background) and the reader accept and want to be a part of his art.
Having said that, there is SO much more to this story than just being a “book about getting tied up.” There is actually a well thought out story that surrounds that one aspect of their romantic relationship. Amery is a self-made graphic artist in advertising, but is essentially alone, apart from her three friends who work in her building. Ronin is a self-made upper level martial artist, with a questionable past that never fully opens up to Amery, despite her continued requests for him to do so.
This ultimately leads to the major conflict of the story that leaves the reader anticipating the conclusion in Book 2: Unwound. Bound is an excellent introduction to a fantastic series. The surrounding characters add even more depth and intrigue and will leave you hoping that once Amery and Ronin get their HEA, that Ms. James will indulge us with someone elses!
